Chromium OS USB DiskThis is a USB installer disk for Chromium OS version R80, released under the GNU General Public License. Chromium OS is an open-source project that aims to build an operating system that provides a fast, simple, and more secure computing experience for people who spend most of their time on the web.

The Chromium OS installer disk allows you to install Chromium OS on any compatible laptop or desktop, or run the OS from the disk itself. It is essentially similar to the Chrome OS which comes installed on ChromeBooks, and most extensions and apps that run on Chrome OS will run within Chromium OS. Do not use this installer on an actual ChromeBook, it is for the rest of the computing universe… One caveat seems to be that although Google’s Chrome OS allows for the install of some Android software via Google Play Store, Chromium OS does not.

However, once up and running you can install additional apps and extensions via the Chrome Web Store. It is a lot of fun, and if you have an old PC, Mac or laptop it might be worth giving it a go as it is less demanding than Windows or macOS.

To install, boot from the USB disk. You cannot run it from within Windows or macOS. Once you are past the initial boot screens it will ask for your Google login. At this point you may continue and use the USB disk as a live system, leaving your computer untouched. The USB disk will retain the login information next time you boot from it, so you can use the USB disk on different computers to get to your data. Once you are satisfied that this is the OS for your computer you can also install it to the hard disk, and so enjoy faster performance, by following these instructions. Installing Chromium OS on your hard disk will wipe everything that is on it, so be sure you have it all backed-up.

As with all system installs, your mileage may vary. I have one laptop that runs another version of Chromium OS that won’t boot from this disk at all, while another laptop originally designed for Windows XP boots just fine. I make no promises!

This installer is created from the version of ChromiumOS lovingly developed by Arnold the Bat. I use the Special version as it appears to provide the broadest range of drivers, hopefully increasing the chances of install success. However if you need additional support please refer to the Arnold the Bat website.
